GOOMOO ADVENTURES: THE MAGICAL WORLD OF SHREWSBURY

GOOMOO ADVENTURES: THE MAGICAL WORLD OF SHREWSBURY

Shrewsbury is one of mine and Becs’ favourite places to visit, and as magic enthusiasts, it captures exactly what we look for and love in a destination. I use the term magic in both a specific and figurative way. Specifically, because it has some truly beautiful, magical places to explore, a history steeped in mystery and the supernatural, and charming trinket shops. Figuratively, because of the vibe, atmosphere, and sheer wonder of the place (as if it were brewed in a cauldron or conjured by ancient green witches). In this blog post, I’ll be sharing our favourite spots to visit (magical and otherwise) and how you, too, can enjoy Shrewsbury as a fellow magic enthusiast.

Now, I know what you might be thinking, “Shrewsbury? Isn’t that the place with the prison?” and all you ghost hunters are probably expecting me to spill the tea on spooky encounters, but surprisingly, we’ve yet to explore the prison. There are simply too many wondrous things outside those walls that Shrewsbury has to offer, though when we do go, we’ll let you know exactly what it’s like.

Magical and Mysterious Shops

Welsh Bridge Books and Collectables

Welsh Bridge Books and Collectables Shrewsbury

Wow, that was my first thought when I stepped into this treasure trove of trinkets, curiosities, and Becs’ favourite thing in the world (after me of course), books.

Walking around this shop of wonders felt like stepping into a place from a storybook, part Cave of Wonders from Aladdin, part Room of Requirement from Harry Potter, with a dash of lost pharaoh’s tomb. If you love collectibles, mysteries, and books (both old and new), this is the shop to visit. Every item seems to have a story, and you never know what you’ll discover around the next corner.

The crooked floors (which I was half convinced I’d fall through) and tight spiral staircases added to the adventure, making it feel like exploring a wise sage’s private collection. Plus, there’s a stash of Doctor Who goodies, which is always a win in my book.

The Enchanted Labyrinth

The Enchanted Labrynth Shrewsbury

We love a good crystal shop (Becs especially), and this one does not disappoint. It’s filled with everything a witchy heart could desire. What really sets it apart, though, is the absolute respect the owners have for their items, from keeping books closed so they don’t absorb random energies, to the care put into every single product.

You can tell the shop is truly loved, the owners are incredibly knowledgeable and always happy to chat, sharing little bits of wisdom before sending you on your way. It’s a fantastic shop, well worth a visit.

The Labyrinth Brings Harry Potter to Shrewsbury

The Labrynth brings Harry Potter to Shrewsbury

Me and Becs have been to many Harry Potter shops, and honestly, most have one thing in common, they’re obvious tourist traps. The same overpriced items appear again and again, capitalising on Potter popularity.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Harry Potter as much as the next muggle, but I have the same opinion about these shops as I do about the circus (if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all).

The Labyrinth, however, breaks the mould. It’s clear that a genuine love for the books has gone into creating an enchanting, fresh take on the classic Potter shop. It’s full of magical trinkets and collectible items that make you feel like you’ve stepped straight into Diagon Alley. If you’re a Potter fan and want to nerd out, you’ll love it as much as if you’d swallowed a gallon of love potion (I know I do).

Places That Just Feel Magical

The Market

Shrewsbury Indoor Market

The Market feels like an old-school bazaar without the shouting vendors trying to pull you in, but it is busy, and I mean busy. You’ll be dodging, ducking, dipping, diving, and dodging (yes, twice, Dodgeball rules apply here) people at every turn.

In a world where “markets are dying because of Amazon,” it’s wonderful to be part of this bustling atmosphere. The variety is incredible, no two stalls are the same. Sure, there are a couple of butchers, but the majority offer something unique, giving you a different experience with every step. The market’s energy is just magical.

Shrewsbury as a Whole

Shrewsbury Shropshire

I know what you’re thinking, “Jake, come on now, this is a cop-out, you can’t just say Shrewsbury.” Well, you know what I say? It’s my blog, so mind your own gosh darn business (I do what I want).

The truth is, Shrewsbury is magical in itself, the cobbled side streets, the beautiful churches, the lively yet friendly atmosphere, it’s enchanting. We love coming here for that reason, the cafés are cosy and perfect for working in (I’m literally writing this in a bar/café with a Diet Coke right now), the shops are quirky and unique, not just your standard high street chains (though naturally, a few of those are around too), and the people are friendly, interesting, and full of character.

It’s just a joy to be here, so honestly, stop what you’re doing and come to Shrewsbury.

A Brief History: Occult & Supernatural in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury English Bridge

Okay, okay, I will add some actual history and mysticism here for you as well, just because it is you though, I wouldn’t do it for anyone else!

Shrewsbury’s winding medieval streets and shadowy little passageways have always had an air of mystery about them, and for centuries they’ve been home to tales of the strange and supernatural.

Local legends tell of “Bloudie Jack,” a cheerful-sounding fellow from the 12th century who was actually a murderous menace and is now said to haunt Shrewsbury Castle, as well as ghostly figures who drift through the Dingle gardens or lurk in old timber-framed houses as if waiting for the right moment to say “boo.”

In the 1600s the town saw its fair share of witchcraft accusations, with trials and bizarre ordeals that could change a person’s life forever (whether they were guilty or not). Many homes were once armed to the teeth with protective charms, rowan crosses, horseshoes, and little scraps of paper covered in spells hidden in walls to keep witches and evil spirits away (actually, thinking about it, that’s how our house is basically set up now!) Even well into the last century people in Shrewsbury still whispered about curses, strange happenings, and charms to keep trouble at bay, which just adds another layer to the magical and mysterious atmosphere that clings to the town like a cloak.

So, even after everything if you were still not convinced that Shrewsbury was an incredible place, then hopefully this has convinced you!

Special Mentions

If you’re visiting Shrewsbury and need somewhere to stay for a night or two, this little gem in Wem (about 20 minutes outside the centre) is perfect. The owner, Rebecca, is incredibly welcoming, bubbly, and full of magical energy.

We stayed in the King Room with a balcony and were blown away by the view, fields stretching for miles, and in the evening we were surrounded by swooping swallows. It was breathtaking. Also, shoutout to the ponies and Smudge the cat for being delightful hosts in their own right.

I can’t talk about Shrewsbury without mentioning Umai, wow, just… wow. The food is always fresh, the staff are warm and friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. For two starters, two mains, and drinks, we paid just £25 each, not bad at all.

The location adds to the charm, a covered, cobbled alleyway with a Japanese lantern outside, making it feel like stepping into a little side street in Japan (absolutely beautiful, and yes, magical, because this blog is about the magic of Shrewsbury).

All in all, if you’re thinking of going to Shrewsbury, stop thinking and just do it. I can tell you about it all day, but to truly feel the magic, you have to be here.

- Jake
